ARSENE LUPIN

France's Gentleman Burglar

Meet Arsène Lupin, a character that embodies charm, wit, and cunning! Created by French writer Maurice Leblanc in the early 20th century, Lupin isn't your typical villain. He's a "gentleman burglar" – an anti-hero who uses his brilliant mind and mastery of disguise to pull off audacious heists, often targeting the wealthy and corrupt.

But he's not just a thief; Lupin is also a detective, a master of disguise, and a moralistic figure who sometimes helps the innocent or brings true villains to justice. His adventures are filled with suspense, clever riddles, and unexpected twists, making him a beloved figure in French literature and a fascinating introduction to a unique kind of hero!

VAN GOGH

Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the Netherlands. He is one of the most famous painters of the Post-Impressionist movement.
Van Gogh the traveller
During his lifetime, Van Gogh travelled to several cities and regions:
The Hague, London, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Auvers-sur-Oise, and also Belgium (notably Brussels and the Borinage region).

Van Gogh in Paris

Van Gogh moved to Paris in 1886, where he lived with his brother Theo, an art dealer. This period marked a turning point in his artistic style. He discovered Impressionism and met other artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Pissarro, and Gauguin. Under their influence, his palette lightened and his works became more colourful and dynamic. Paris gave him a new lease of life, but the city exhausted him. After two years, he left the capital for the south of France in search of light and tranquillity.

Picasso "au lapin Agile" 1905

The Lapin Agile is a famous cabaret in Montmartre, in Paris. It was founded in the 19th century (around 1860) and became a key place for artistic and bohemian life in the early 20th century.

Its name comes from a painting by André Gill, which depicted a rabbit jumping out of a cooking pot, leading to the nickname “Le Lapin à Gill,” later shortened to Lapin Agile (meaning "Nimble Rabbit").

The cabaret was a meeting place for poets, musicians, painters, and performers, including Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire, Modigliani, Max Jacob, and Aristide Bruant. The atmosphere was simple, friendly, and open, ideal for creativity and exchange.

Still active today, the Lapin Agile remains a living symbol of Montmartre and its rich artistic tradition.

SAINT DENIS

Saint Denis is known as the first bishop of Paris and one of the patron saints of France. He lived in the 3rd century, at a time when Christians were still persecuted by the Roman Empire.

He was sent from Rome to spread Christianity in the Paris region. Because of his faith, he was arrested and beheaded on the hill of Montmartre, along with two companions.

According to legend, after being beheaded, Saint Denis picked up his own head and walked several kilometers while preaching, until he reached the place where he wanted to be buried. That spot later became the site of the Basilica of Saint-Denis.

He became a powerful symbol of faith and bravery, and his tomb became a famous place of pilgrimage.

LA COMMUNE

The Paris Commune was a revolutionary uprising that took place in 1871, just after France lost a war against Prussia. The people of Paris, especially from the working class, refused to accept the new government based in Versailles. They took control of the city and set up their own government, run by the people.

The Commune lasted a little over two months, from March 18 to May 28, 1871. The communards wanted social justice, workers’ rights, free education, equality between men and women, and the separation of church and state.

But the French government sent in the army to take back Paris. The repression was brutal — thousands of communards were killed during what’s known as the “Bloody Week.”

Even though it was crushed, the Paris Commune remains a powerful symbol of the fight for freedom, democracy, and social equality.
